“The softball
program at Glendale Community College is looking for not only
good players but more importantly, student-athletes ready to
make the commitment to change their lives.’’
This quote by Head Coach Dave “Hawk” Wilder clearly sums up his
philosophy as one of the most experienced coaches at the
community college level with over 10 years of coaching
experience, and decades of work as a coach for youth teams
throughout the San Fernando Valley and as a sought after private
coach. A Native American and a member of the Karuk Tribe, Wilder
is passionate about his heritage and has given much back to his
people.
His
2008 Glendale College team finished 22-17 overall and 15-10 in
the always tough Western State Conference and symbolized his
philosophy that pitching, solid defense and speed and quickness
wins games. His top pitcher, Kelly Korras, was named the WSC
Pitcher of the Year and several of his players were among the
conference leaders in hitting, stolen bases and fielding. Diana
Garcia, Debbie Martin and Melissa Legaspi also earned
all-conference honors.
Despite losing 13 games this season by just one run, Coach
Wilder remained upbeat as his team turned that negative into a
positive by reeling off a 10-game winning streak and contending
for a playoff spot until the finals week of the season.
More than just a coach that considers himself a success through
wins and losses, Wilder stresses the team concept first and
foremost and finds his greatest joy in talking about his former
players who have transferred to four-year schools to continue
their playing careers or to concentrate on their education.
