Welcome! The Physical Education Division would like to welcome you and thank you for your interest in the Glendale Community College Personal Trainer Certificate. We hope that after reading about our program, you will join us in the pursuit of better, safer health and fitness promotion and education. On this page you will find information on the purpose behind the creation of the Certificate, a description of what the program entails, and a list of courses required for completion of it.
The element that makes our program outstanding is the hands-on
aspect of the program. If you are a fitness enthusiast, are
considering a career in a health profession, or prefer “doing” to
“sitting” in the classroom, this is an excellent opportunity to gain
extensive practical training in a field experiencing growth faster
than we can prepare educators.

Certificate RationaleUpon release of the Surgeon General's report on physical activity and health, the federal government and its research organizations formally pronounced that the development of chronic diseases relate to dietary habits and sedentary lifestyle. Taking active measures to modify lifestyle and behaviors is an effective and recommended means by which to prolong life and promote quality of life. Unfortunately, until recently there have been few educated Health and Fitness Specialists working in fitness facilities. To correct this problem, an organization called the American Council on Exercise (ACE) was created, whose purpose is to certify, via national written testing, persons who have knowledge in health and fitness to safely deliver proper and adequate health/fitness education to the public. In order to earn a national certification of this sort, recipients must be adept at assessing health and fitness status, and at designing programs based on current exercise and health guidelines. Fitness centers are now requiring that the ACE or equivalent national certification be earned before or upon the hiring of new employees.
Glendale Community College Physical Education division has produced
certificate program, which teaches students the means by which to
apply exercise science theory to practical work with clients. In
doing so, students develop the skills needed to pass any written
ACE examination
