The Field Station - Estacion del Mar Cortes (EMC):
Home base to all Baja class offerings, EMC is a
facility located in the growing fishing village of
Bahia de los Angeles on the shores of the Sea of
Cortes. It is a functional place, which becomes both
a home and a study station for participants.
Participants help with daily cleaning and food
preparation chores under the supervision of
station staff and a cook. Students sleep on
comfortable canvas cots placed either inside the
field station or outside on the sandy beach,
next to the water and under the stars. From the
station porches, you will have an unparalleled view
of the many islands in the bay. Glorious sunrises
will softly awaken you.
Bahia de los Angeles: The site of the field
station, "Estacion del Mar Cortes," is Bahia
de los Angeles, a growing fishing village
nestled in a beautiful bay on the east side of the
Baja peninsula on the Sea of Cortes. The
islands in the bay are protected under Mexican law,
and the college visits them with the permission of
the regional office of SEMARNAT, ministry of the
environment. These islands are now a
UNESCO-designated world heritage site due to its
unique cultural and natural significance.
Students will discover there is a rich and complex
ecosystem, which supports a large variety of marine
species - birds, fish, dolphins, whales,
invertebrates - alongside a highly specialized
desert environment that runs down to the shore.
Ancient pictographs on nearby cliffs and cave walls
betray the presence of aboriginal peoples of
the area. Trips to old Spanish settlements and
mines, and to the San Borja Mission, provide
opportunities to relive the history of the area
and open windows to the rich culture of the Mexican
people living in this dramatic union of desert and
sea. |
