BOARD ACTIONS
On December 15, 2003,
the Board of Trustees approved:
§
The addition
of American Sign Language 151 – Introduction to the Structure of American Sign
Language; Music 241 – Concert Singers: Traditional; and Music 242 – Concert
Singers: Contemporary to the official course offerings.
§
The academic
calendar for 2004-2005 and 2005-2006. Each academic year consists of two
16-week semesters and a six-week winter session. There will be one six-week
summer session in 2005 and two five-week summer sessions in 2006.
§
The self-study
report for the accreditation visit scheduled for March 16 through 18, 2004. The
report will be submitted to the headquarters of the Western Association of
Schools and Colleges and distributed to each of the team members who will visit
the college in March.
§
An agreement
with Spencer/Hoskins Associates in an amount not to exceed $15,000 to provide
master planning services to update the college Facilities Master Plan.
§
An agreement
with Campus Planning Group for educational facilities planning in an amount not
to exceed $15,000 to develop the 5-year capital outlay plan for submission to
the Chancellor’s Office.
§
An “Assured
Maintenance Agreement” with McQuay Services in the amount of $36,240. The
agreement is a renewal for the preventative maintenance of the San Gabriel
Building and Library HVAC chillers, providing for 24 hour a day service, seven
days a week as well as regular inspections.
§
An agreement
with Lundgren Management for construction management services for the Culinary
Arts Addition project in an amount not to exceed $30,000. This project provides
for the addition of office space to the Culinary Arts Building.
§
An agreement
with the City of Glendale for airtime and maintenance of radio equipment for
the Campus Police. The term of this agreement is three years and will be less
expensive than if another outside support service was used.
In addition:
§
Accreditation Coordinator and Professor of English as a Second Language Dr. Kathleen F. Flynn and Jill Lewis, Accreditation Co-Coordinator and Manager, Instructional Services made a presentation on the
accreditation self-study. GCC will receive an on-site visit from its
accreditation team March 16-18, 2004. This process happens every six years. The
Board thanked Flynn and Lewis for their dedication to this project.
§
The Board
observed a moment in silence in memory of Rae
Berry, former trustee and
long-time supporter of the college. A memorial service for Berry will be held
on Friday, January 9, at 1 p.m. in Kreider Hall.
§
The Board thanked
Congressmen Adam Schiff and David Dreier
for their hard work in securing a set-aside of $100,000 to go towards the
Science Center Education Outreach Program. Passed by the House, it is awaiting
Senate vote in January.
§
Winter session
begins on January 5. Enrollment is down 2.8% from last year at this time,
however unit count is up 2.9%.
§
Associated
Students will be purchasing two life size sculptures of students as part of The
Missing Community College Student project, a statewide art installation for community
college advocacy. Community colleges around the state are purchasing sculptures, each one representing 500
students denied access to college. Students will decorate the sculptures, which
will be installed on the Capitol lawn or similar location during the second
march on behalf of Community Colleges on March 15. In addition to making a
dramatic visual presentation, the art pieces will represent the broad diversity
of community college students across the state.

The Board
congratulated the Visual & Performing Arts Division on their successful end
of year performances and events.
§
The Board
congratulated the new CSEA officers and thanked Nancy Lopez for her years of experience as president of the
organization.
