BOARD ACTIONS

On December 18, 2006, the Board of Trustees approved:

A resolution establishing a sister-institution relationship between Glendale Community College and Ghapan State Engineering College in Ghapan Armenia. Through the activities of the Glendale Ghapan Sister City Association, contacts between GCC and the Engineering College have developed over the past three years. The resolution is in recognition of this growing relationship.
The acceptance of a bid received from Los Angeles Air Conditioning in the amount of $1,294,000 for the Gym HVAC and Central Plant Connection Project. The project will utilize excess Central Plant cooling capacity to provide air conditioning inside the Verdugo Gym and add a new hot water boiler to provide heating.
A resolution authorizing the utilization of design-build construction delivery method, as provided for under Education Code Section 81700, for the Garfield Campus Expansion Project.
A revised Board of Trustees meeting schedule for 2006-2007, which moves the board meeting scheduled for February 2007 from February 26 to February 12.
The scheduling of a one-day Board Retreat for the Board of Trustees on February 2, 2007, to be held at the Professional Development Center.
The addition of three new courses of study to the official course offerings of the college: Art 147 – Publication Design I; Art 148 – Publication Design II; and Music 178 – Music Recording and Sequencing.
Sabbatical leave for the following individuals: Troy Davis for Fall 2007, Kim Foong Chong for Fall 2007/Spring 2008 and Elizabeth Fremgen for Fall 2007/Spring 2008.
An agreement with Rigdon Land Surveyors in the amount of $9,144 for a land and utility survey at the Garfield Campus. Funds are available within the Measure G allocation for the Garfield Campus Expansion.
An agreement with O’Neal Construction Inspection, in the amount of $36,960, for Inspection Services required for the Gym HVAC and Central Plant Connection Project.
An agreement with California State University Los Angeles and Verdugo Mental Health Center to utilize their facilities for clinical experience for the GCC Nursing Program.
An agreement with Campus Planning Group for educational facilities planning in an amount not to exceed $15,000 to assist the District in meeting the guidelines of the Chancellor’s Office for the 5-year plan, Space Inventory and Project Proposals. This plan forms the rationale and basis for state funding decisions. The period of the agreement is from January 1, 2007 to December 31, 2007.
An agreement with Spenser/Hoskins Associates for architectural services involved with the Laboratory/College Services Building, in the amount of 6.8814% of the actual construction cost of the building, $2,432,586.
A change order to the Parking Structure/Elevator Tower and Bridge Project, increasing the cost of the project by $513,253.62.
The declaration of various equipment items as surplus to the needs of the college. The Director, Business Services, has authorization to dispose of these items in accordance with the requirements of the Education Code.

In addition:

 Edward Karpp, Director, Institutional Research, gave a presentation on the Chancellor’s Office Accountability Report. Dr. Karpp shared preliminary data from the report, which was established under AB1417 to measure college performance on the state’s educational outcome priorities. The first draft was submitted in October and the college will receive a final draft on January 22, 2007. The college will have one month to prepare a self-assessment based on the results. According to the preliminary data, GCC’s numbers are extremely positive when compared to similar colleges.

 The Board reviewed a Revision of Board Policy 9340 – Meetings that changes the Order of Business by moving "Communications" ahead of "Finance Reports."

 The Board congratulated all of the December 2006 retirees including Steve White, Vice President of Instructional Services. ASGCC will be starting a scholarship in honor of White.

 The college received a $10,000 grant from AT&T Foundation to supplement the National Science Foundation Math and Science Transfer, Excellence and Retention Scholarship Program.

 The Office of Admissions contacted 25,869 students via an automated telephone blast that reminded them to register for the Spring Semester.

 Dr. Dawn Lindsay will assume the position of Vice President of Instructional Services on January 4, 2007.

 The Board congratulated the Men’s and Women’s Cross Country teams on an outstanding year. The Women finished as Western State Conference Champions and Southern California Champions. Both teams qualified for the California State Championships with the Women finishing 2nd in the State. Coach Eddie Lopez received the 'California Community College Cross Country Coach of the Year' 2006 for the women’s program. It was his fourth time being recognized as such.

 The Board wished the entire campus community a fantastic holiday season.
