CLASSIFIED COUNCIL CORNER

by Vernice McCullough, Classified Council President

Because of the change in the school's calendar, we have been presented with a wonderful opportunity. Classified week is May 20 - 24, and this year, Classified Council is going all out to provide our members with plenty of activities to help celebrate. Some of the ideas garnered at the open Classified Council meeting held on March 28, 2002 were: basketball and volleyball tournaments, school-wide scavenger hunt, golfing tournament, talent show, and a luncheon to announce the recipient of the John Davitt Award for Outstanding Classified Service. All activities would take place during or around the lunch hour, giving everyone a chance to participate.

In order to arrange and facilitate these activities, we are asking for your support. People are needed to sit on organization committees for each event. Responsibilities will include some of the following: securing locations with the proper permissions, organizing teams for the events, promoting the event, and running it on its assigned day. This may seem like a great deal to ask of you, but please remember, you are only one of a group of people working on one event. The time required should be only two meetings (about one hour each) and an hour or two on the day of the event.

This is an opportunity for classified staff to shine. We are attempting to establish a tradition that could and should become a much anticipated yearly event. Please get involved and volunteer to help!

You do not have to be a member of Classified Council to help or contribute. We plan to invite all Glendale College staff, faculty, and students to participate in the events. If you'd like to volunteer and/or participate in any of the activities, please e-mail me your name, department and extension, and which committee you'd like to be on or event you'd like to be in, and we'll make it so.

Our next open council meeting will be held on April 30, 2002 at 1 pm (room TBA). Our speakers will be Alex Leon from then Foundation Office and Elizabeth Fremgen from Staff Development. Please mark your calendars to attend.

Please feel free to e-mail me at vernicem@glendale.edu or call x5134. Your suggestions and comments are always welcome. I look forward to hearing from you. *
