by Lynn McMurrey, President, Guild
For the first time in my twenty years at GCC there has been a runoff
election for a Guild office. By the time you read
this article that election will have been completed and the winner
declared. This is very healthy for the union. All offices
should be so hotly contested. As of this writing, your Guild
officers for the year 2002-2003 are:

President:
Lynn McMurrey
1st Vice President: Mark Maier
2nd Vice President: Phyllis Eckler
PIO: Ramona Barrio-Sotillo
Treasurer: Mike Allen
Grievance Officer: Bill Shamhart
There
will be a runoff election between
Roxanne Dominguez and Lynn Pomeroy for Secretary.
I am urgently requesting that you think about running for a Guild office
next year. If you wish to know what that would entail, the duties
are listed on the Guild web site, or you can call me at extension 5395.
Last month I outlined the procedure for filling the place on the Board of
Trustees, left vacant by the passing of Mary Hamilton. I am happy
to announce that the procedure was very effective in allowing
faculty, staff, and students to have input in choosing from the six
candidates who qualified. It was unanimous that Anita Quinonez
Gabrielian be appointed for the one-year position. Ms. Quinonez
Gabrielian
was officially sworn in on Monday April 15.
The negotiating team has come to a tentative agreement with the
District on office hours for part-time faculty. We are coming
closer to the concept that if you teach a class, you get an office hour. We
hope that a definition of "equity" for adjunct faculty will be
agreed upon in the very near future. Details of the above will be
communicated to you at our next Guild meeting and by e-mail.
Remember that nothing is final until it has been presented to the
membership, discussed, and voted on.
I have asked you to submit ideas for next year's reopeners. We
are allowed two non-salary issues this year. This is the last
year in our three-year contract. We traditionally accept one
reopener for full-time faculty, and one for part-time faculty. The
suggested reopeners will be reviewed by Guild Executive and
presented to the membership at our next Guild meeting.
The discussions on "Block Scheduling" are continuing on
Wednesday and Friday afternoons. Please try to attend these
meetings. It is vital that you stay informed on this issue and
the ramifications a change to block scheduling, and a possible change of
calendar, would have on your working conditions and the contract. &
