We all have stories about
someone who has made a difference in our lives. Maybe it was a parent, a
family friend or someone at school who took the time to mentor us and
help us find our way.
For those
of us who took the community college route as the starting point in our
career paths, it was probably a teacher who took the
time to help guide us. For me it was Joe Thomas, a long-time journalism
professor at the college and the former advisor for the El Vaquero when
I was on staff 25 years ago. He was firm but fair and shared with us his
knowledge about writing and putting together a paper with the kind of
joy that a parent would take in teaching his child how to do something.
When he
died a few years ago, several individuals came forward to
establish a scholarship in his name through the Foundation office.
The award is given every year to a journalism student and helps to
keep his memory alive as well as his contributions to
the school.
While the
process of establishing the scholarship in the name of
Thomas was done internally, through the contributions of former students
and colleagues, many scholarships and campus projects are sponsored by
individuals in the community. In these times of budget woes for the
college, faculty and staff can help by being eyes and ears in the
community open to opportunities to raise money for the college.
The
Foundation office is a good resource for anyone who learns of a
fundraising opportunity or wants to get more information on how to
find opportunities that might benefit the college. Please call x5199

college faculty
and staff can be more pro-active about fundraising for the college.
