Mona Field's daughter Tania Verafield won the Method Fest acting competition linked to the Method Fest Film Festival. Tania was the sole winner among three hundred competitors.

On May 14, Glady Kabateck, Counselor/Coordinator-Re-Entry Program & GCC Director Alumni Association, will receive the Women of Heart and Excellence award from the YWCA at their Legacy Luncheon. (See information below )  

Allison Kolpas, older daughter of Sid and Laurie Kolpas, is working on her Ph.D. in mathematics at UCSB on a full scholarship. She will be married on July 12. Younger daughter Jamie has started her college career at UCSB as well, with a double major in dance and mathematics.

Martin Mondrus, professor emeritus of art, won a Juror's Choice award for his work in the just-concluded Burbank Fine Arts Federation Membership Show.

Donna Scarfe, the Interpreter Coordinator for the Center for Students with Disabilities, will leave GCC on May 30 after working here for six years. Her husband, the Rev. Alan Scarfe, was ordained the ninth bishop for the Episcopal Diocese of Iowa on April 5, 2003, and will have the oversight of 64 churches there.

Arturo Yepez, who works in the office of  Admissions & Records, will graduate this May from Cal State  Dominguez Hills with a B.A. in Public Administration. He plans to pursue a Master's degree in the same field or in counseling.

The Chaparral won two Communications Awards at the CFT Convention (March 21-23, in San Francisco).

A third place award went to Phyllis Eckler, in the category of Best Continuing Section or Department for “Adjunct Junction.”

Another third place went to Susan Cisco, in the category of Best Flyer or Poster for “This month’s Chaparral is here!” The awards will be presented to the winners at this year’s after-graduation party.


The YWCA Legacy Luncheon raises funds to support the Domestic Violence Project and Encore breast and cervical cancer screening program for low-income women.  The 'Y's nationally recognized programs are available for women and children in our community. Anyone who wishes to attend can call the YWCA at (818) 242-4155.
