When I was a new faculty member,
it was pure chance that someone told me about this great thing called a
Credit Union. I had never heard of a nonprofit bank for public
employees, and it has turned out to be a terrific option in my financial
life.
The Glendale Area Schools Federal Credit Union is open to
anyone who works here (including their family members), and due to new
federal rules, is actually open to all students (and their families) who
attend GCC. The Credit Union office is nearby in Montrose and offers
an ATM machine on our campus for the convenience of members who need
convenient cash. Their bank cards and credit cards are also part of the
larger ATM system and can be used in thousands of locations.
The credit union does not have to make profit, so it can offer better
interest rates on your savings and offer some great services, including
automobile loan/purchase/delivery options, living trust workshops,
mortgages, and much more. You can use the credit union for all your
financial needs, or for any combination: checking, savings, loans,
credit cards, CDs, and IRAs.
One of the best
parts of the credit union is that it is owned and managed by
us.
The board of directors is elected, and most are retired teachers from
GCC or Glendale Unified District. One of the current members is a GCC
retiree, Tom Sweeney. Annual membership meetings involve all
participants and ensure that members are able to vote on major
decisions. (These meetings are lots of fun, too, because they always
give away thousands of dollars in door prizes!) The next membership
meeting is Wednesday, April 20 at Glendale High School.
