Elana Edelstein, Assistant Director of Communications, Marketing and Foundation, was recently named the 2007 Community Development Vice President for the California Jaycees, a leadership training and community service organization for young professionals. Over 40 chapters are located throughout the State of California, and Elana will assist each of these chapters in coordinating projects geared to making life better in their communities, from establishing playgrounds for children to large-scale fundraising efforts. She will also help chapters run US Jaycees Nationwide Chapter Projects in conjunction with chapters from coast to coast.

Prof. Osheen Keshishian, EOPS, participated in a two-day conference on “The Ebb and Flow of the Armenian Communities of the Indian Ocean” held at UCLA on March 17-18, 2007. Keshishian's topic was “The Armenian Press in India Since 1794.”

An article submitted by Allison Kolpas, Sid Kolpas' older daughter, will be published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science. The article, based on her research for her doctoral dissertation, is entitled “Coarse-grained analysis of stochasticity-induced switching between collective motion states”; it is a mathematical analysis of flocking/swarming/schooling behavior involving systems of partial differential equations. Allison discovered new numerical methods for solving such systems of equations to model fish schooling behavior. She is the principal author, along with Dr. Jeff Moehlis of UCSB and Dr. Ioannis Kevrekidis of Princeton, both professors of Applied Mathematics and members of her Ph.D. Committee.

Lynn Pomeroy (Math department) reports that her daughter, Erica Pomeroy, was the lead field investigator for the Food and Drug Administration on the E.coli spinach contamination last fall, working out of a command center in the Salinas Valley. Lynn's son, Noah Pomeroy, continues to work as a marine debris scuba diver for NOAA through the University of Hawaii at locations such as Hawaii's more remote islands and Guam. Chaparral wants you!

Unique Job Offer!

The Chaparral is seeking talented and committed individuals (no experience necessary) for the position of correspondent.

Write for the Chaparral!

Correspondents would manage and implement internal and external communications (meaning correspondents would commit themselves to write at least one article a year on a topic if interest to the college community).

Writers could represent their own interests, constituents’ interests (such as a member of the Academic Senate or a Guild officer could), community groups’ interests (such as departments, divisions, work areas), as well as the interest of the public at large.

Hiring the Best!

Preferred qualifications: most important, candidates should be pro-active and willing to take the initiative on articles and features, should work well under pressure, have the ability to prioritize, met deadlines, and demonstrate flexibility (in other words, get the article in on time).

We are particularly interested in finding younger faculty who, although interested, feel that they don’t have a lot of time to devote to campus issues, so they haven’t run for Senate of Guild offices, but they could find the time to devote to a single article in the course of a year, and thereby become involved in campus issues whether they be instructional, political, or social (maybe even parking).

Building Character!

The Chaparral is an equal opportunity employer, offering its writers no compensation, no perquisites, no benefits package (but if you work here you have them already); yet we do offer an extraordinary opportunity for professional development to those who are interested.

If curious, concerned or committed, contact the editor, Mona Field, at x5341 or send an e-mail to mfield@glendale.edu
