Small but Mighty:
Our Mini-Brochure Marketing Success

by Alex Leon,  Office of Communications, Marketing and Foundation

Ann Simon noticed something a few weeks ago when she started her job as a publications specialist in the Public Information Office, and it had nothing to do with parking spaces and shuttle schedules.

Everywhere she looked, there were mini-brochures. They were in her office in a tidy rack and in similar displays all over campus. Students were reading them in line at the Admissions Office, and people were reading them online on the GCC website.

The pocket-sized brochures stand out not only for their look and design, but for the information they hold at the reader’s fingertips. Besides their presence on campus, they can be found at the Professional Development Center and the Garfield Campus as well as at several schools and businesses throughout the community.

Since 2002 when they were introduced, 150 mini-brochures have been produced for everything from finding out basic facts about the college in Spanish and English to how to adopt a tree in someone’s name. Looking for a career? How about a brochure about culinary, nutrition and hospitality management or one that explains how to join the fire academy. Need help on campus? Information on the inner workings of the Career Center and what goes on in the Learning Center is readily available.

The fact that Ann will have a hand in designing the informational pieces, as well as the new containers that will hold them, only enhances her feelings for her new job. “I feel very fortunate to be working in such a stimulating environment with students who are very motivated to learn,’’ she says.

The process for creating the mini-brochures starts when the Public Information Office meets with departments and comes up with individualized content that best expresses their features.

At an estimated cost of $800 for 5,000, the mini-brochures are both an economical and effective way to get information out about what is available through different programs and departments on campus. Plastic holders that can hold one or multiple brochures make them easy to display and are available in the Public Information Office.
