Membership in Alumni

Association has its rewards

by Alex Leon, Office of Communications, Marketing, and Foundation

To the students that enter the classrooms, labs and study and lecture halls in the science center complex, they are just names on plaques that are visible before they enter their classes. But without the support of these individuals who stepped forward to help fund the technology in those rooms, the development of the science center might not be what it is today.

Alumni and their children whose names will forever be part of the science center are the Bistagne Family, Ray Edwards, Charles F “Tye” Veden, the John C. Hedlund Family, Larry Zarian and family, Jim Cashion and family, the Maniscalchi family and Dave Greenbaum.

Fostering these kinds of relationships with alumni and benefiting from the support that they bring has been the primary goal of the alumni association since it was established in 1987. Its goal of encouraging alumni’s participation in the educational message of the college is evident in the support it has received for projects like the refurbishment of the library in 1997, the completion of the new bookstore student center in 2001, and the dedication of the Cimmarusti Science Center in 2003.

But being a member of the alumni association is not just a process that benefits the college. Membership also entitles alumni to use of the fitness center and the library as well as a discounted rate to attend home sporting events and fine arts productions. But probably the biggest benefit to being active in the alumni association at Glendale College is the opportunity to promote higher education with scholarships.

Several alumni scholarships will be awarded at the 16th Annual Alumni Awards Banquet on Thursday April 22nd at the Oakmont Country Club. Along with the scholarship awards, Raymond Dumser will be honored with the Raymond D. Edwards Award of Merit for his Career Achievement and Community Service, and Tom and Wanda Bistagne will be honored with the J. Walter Smith Service Award for Distinguished Service to Glendale Community College.

Betty Musacco will also be honored that evening as the recipient of the Patrons Club Presidential Award.
