KIA Raffle turns out to be a winner for Glendale College
by Alex Leon, Office of Communications, Marketing, and Foundation

Melineh Hambarsumian won the car, but the real winners were the students at Glendale College.

That was the feeling Tuesday, October 25 when Hambarsumian, a re-entry student at the college, had her $20 raffle ticked picked from a drum containing 1500 entries to win a KIA Sportage donated by Glendale KIA. The raffle was sponsored by the Armenian Friends of Glendale College Foundation.

Nick Hacopian, a local businessman and a member of the Foundation Board of Directors, said it was the desire of several Armenians on the board to get together and get a project off the ground to support the college and the Foundation. The project raised over $10,000, and the money supports the endowments for the planetarium and athletics.

“The concept for the fundraiser started in late 2004 but it took several months of stops and starts to get it off the ground. We were hoping to get more support from students on campus who were offered a discounted rate of $10 per ticket, but we never quite got the momentum we were looking for to raise money for them,’’ said Hacopian. “But despite the setbacks and the work involved behind the scenes to make a project like this successful, I think we’re all pleased with how it turned out. Especially because a student won the car and we raised money for Glendale College.’’

Speaking on the phone about her good fortune, Hambarsumian said she never dreamed she would win and only wanted to support the college and the Foundation when   she purchased a ticket.

“I never win anything, so it was definitely a shock when they called me and told me I had won. I still can’t believe it,’’ she said. “I have a master’s degree from UCLA and I came back to Glendale College to take a class as personal enrichment. I bought the ticket from my teacher, Phil Kazanjian, who is a also a Foundation Board Member. I guess it’s appropriate that the class is called “Money Management.’’ &
