Spin

by Theresa Lorch, Wellness and Fitness Instructor

The Spin on Theresa:

Theresa Lorch has a BS in Psychobiology from UCLA, a Master's in Physical Education in the Department of Behavioral Science and Education and is currently working on a doctorate in Higher Education Leadership. She has just about 60 units beyond her bachelor's degree in classes she has taken for mentoring and for personal growth related to health and fitness, including yoga, tennis, swimming, fitness center classes, step aerobics, weight training, and other relevant classes.  She has worked at GCC for seven years and was certified for instructing Spin by Johnny G., the person who coined the term. GCC is now approved as a certification site for people who want to be certified.

"What is it?” you ask, "I've heard mention of Spin, but, what! . . .

We have it here on campus?"

Yes, right here in our own Lifestyle Fitness Lab we've been offering indoor cycling to music by certified SPIN instructors for the past couple of years.

Looking for a new, easy, and fun way to get your physical exercise? Good, this is one way to fulfill the bottom portion of the new Food Pyramid, which we can talk about during staff hours.  Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, the Fitness Center hours from 3:30 to 5 PM are dedicated to staff and faculty of Glendale Community College.

On Fridays at 4 PM, members of the staff and faculty engage their muscles, heart, and lungs in a cycling class, learning how to climb, sprint, and jump, on specially designed stationary bicycles.  We have departmental members from Accounting, Campus Police, English, Human Resources, ITS, Library, and Social Sciences coming together for a choreographed workout with music of multiple genres.

Now, if you're in the Contemplation Stage of Exercise, think about next spring semester.  We'll offer SPIN on Mondays and Wednesdays at 5 PM.  In either case, your participation will bring you FLEX credit and be a significant step toward a healthier you!

If none of these options accommodate your schedule, call the Lifestyle Fitness Center at x5845 to reserve time on any machine, any time the Center is open.&
