Chaparral wins award...

Congratulations to each of the contributors to the article "Remembering Jonnie" (published in the February 2001 Chaparral) which received recognition and the Third Place Award in the category of "Best Combination of Story and Graphics," at the CFT Communications Awards.

We entered the article in the CFT Awards program under the title "Remembering Jonnie" By Linda Serra et al, because Linda's name came first in the ensemble production, and the format would not allow for all of your names to be included.  So, following is a list of the "et al" in the order that the names appeared in the original article: Linda Serra, Nancy Lopez, Mona Field, Susan Mesko, Charli Chambers, Mike Eberts, Maureen Mc Neely, Glady Kabateck, Susan Borquez.

In addition, Susan Cisco and Patricia Chamroonrat are to be congratulated for the photo layout and graphics which accompanied the text.

The official recognition of their efforts is a fitting testament to the high regard for Jonnie which we all felt, but which all of them translated into fact.

We will celebrate the receipt of the award at the upcoming Guild party for the Chaparral on April 11 from noon to 1:30 p.m. in AD249.

Math, math, math!

Sid Kolpas and Gary Massion were awarded a Peer Led Team Learning (PLTL) Grant from the National Science Foundation.  Implemented next fall, it will try to improve student success in Math 101 using mandatory Supplemental Instruction sessions led by student peers, and conceptually structured worksheets.

Sid Kolpas and Steve Marsden will be quoted and referenced this fall in a new statistics book to be published by the Princeton University Press. The reference deals with Sid's and Steve's derivation of the number "e" using infinite multiple integration and probability theory.

Sid Kolpas will have an article published in the April Mathematics Teacher. The article is titled "Let Your Fingers Do The Multiplying."

For academic excellence during the fall 2001 semester, the Alliance for Minority Participation (AMP) students earned $10,800 worth of additional scholarship money from the NSF.

Allison Kolpas, older daughter of Sid and Laurie Kolpas, has been offered full scholarships/graduate assistantships in the Ph.D. programs in mathematics at both UCSC and UCSD.

More news...

In December, our new economics instructor, Dr. Amber Casolari, successfully defended her Ph.D. thesis at the University of California Riverside. Her dissertation, "An Examination of Targeted Welfare Programs in the United States," looked at the impact of welfare reform on different types of households, most importantly those headed by women.
