An election for three of the
five seats on the college's Board of Trustees will be held on April 1.
Incumbents Robert Holmes and Martin
Pilgreen are running for re-election, as is Anita Quinonez
Gabrielian, who was appointed to take Mary Hamilton's seat after her
untimely demise. Two challengers are also running, Ara Najarian
and our own Kathleen Burke-Kelly. The top two vote-getters in this
election will receive regular four-year terms, but because Mary
Hamilton's term would have still been ongoing at this point, the third
place vote-getter will receive only the remainder of her term, two
years.
After
careful consideration, the Guild and CSEA have voted to
endorse Ms. Burke-Kelly and Ms. Quinonez Gabrielian. Kathleen was
a student here in the 1970s and came back to GCC as a part-time faculty
member in 1981. She went on to become a full-time faculty member
and then chair of the Visual and Performing Arts division. Her 20 years
of experience working at the college will prove to be a real asset to
the Board.
Anita works
in the External Affairs department at SBC. She has served with
distinction in her 9 months on the Board and should continue to improve
as she learns more about the college and its people.
Professors
for Quality Education (PQE) is the political action committee of the
Guild and will be taking the lead in promoting Kathleen and Anita.
There are many ways you can help in this effort. You can send
postcards to everyone you know
living in the district, informing them of our support for these two
candidates.
If you live
in the district yourself, offering to place lawn signs for them helps
significantly. We will also be calling voters about Kathleen and
Anita as we get closer to Election Day. Now that so many of you
are experienced phone-bankers (after Measure G), we hope to get a lot of
volunteers. Finally, if you would like to make a donation to PQE
in place of (or on top of) your payroll deductions, this is of course
welcome. Contact me quickly about your interest in any of these
opportunities! &
