In the know I have
been a president for only six months, and one thing for sure is that
it has been an exceptionally busy time for me as your new president.
I have been fortunate enough to have the support of the CSEA
executive board and negotiations team. My appreciation goes out to
the members who continue to devote their time and effort, as we keep
ever vigilant in our efforts to protect classified employees’
rights. There is a lot to be done to improve members’ involvement. I
would like to welcome our new members! As you know,
we were able to settle on a reasonable contract with a
cost-of-living salary increase, which was ratified by the majority
of the membership. The classified retreat is coming in April; this
is a return to what used to be an annual tradition.
Scholarships are available to you and your dependents. Please check
our chapter website and www.csea.com. Our website is up and running,
thanks to Frankie Strong; our minutes completed in a timely manner
thanks to Merrilee Ahaus; amendments to our Constitution are
work-in-progress thanks to Maria Shufeldt; we are actively
participating in the
elections for our Board of Trustees thanks to Hoover Zariani.
Our new Public Relations officer, Armenui Andzhu, just joined our
chapter Executive Board in December and we are already back with our
newsletter, Spirit of 76, available on our chapter website. Armenui
updates the bulletin board in the mail room regularly and sends
announcements via e-mail to the membership. The
endorsement process for the College Board of Trustees was taken most
seriously by the membership. By majority vote our chapter endorsed
the two incumbents, Dr. Vahe Peroomian and Tony Tartaglia. I am planning to continue updating all classified employees about
their rights. This month’s column is no exception; I would like to
share with you some major changes to the Classification Article of
our contract. The Human Resources office will complete fifteen
reclassification study requests (in order received) by the end of
calendar year (not fiscal year). If it takes more than six months to
complete a reclassification study request which results in a higher
salary range, then the employee will be paid retroactively. We were
able to improve deadlines and retroactive pay for reclassifications.
From now on, classified employees are eligible for a new
reclassification study only three years after the results of the
last study were presented to them. The Request for Out of Class
Compensation Form is a new form a classified employee must fill out
before requesting reclassification or for cases when an employee
performs additional duties outside the scope of her/his job duties.
This new form does not require your supervisor’s approval. The Human
Resources office will do a confirmation with the manager in your
area.
Note: there is a deadline for Human Resources to respond to you with
the results. If you need additional information about
reclassification or on the status of a current one, please contact
me.
In unity, Saodat Aziskhanova, President, Chapter 76, CSEA
