Trudi Abram
will chair a panel on issues facing community college studio and art
history faculty at the annual College Art Association conference in Dallas
next year. She'll deliver a paper on a similar subject at the conference
the following year.
Michael Carter,
adjunct in the Anthropology Department, appeared in January on the
nationally syndicated television program “Black Men Revealed.”
Mona Field,
Political Science department, won reelection to a third term on the Los
Angeles Community College District Board of Trustees with 70% of the vote
and full support of the employee organizations. Congratulations, Mona!
Karen Knotts,
adjunct librarian, has a one-woman show,
Tied Up in Knotts, running through March 31 at the Lonny Chapman
Group Repertory Theater in North Hollywood. It's a comedy/drama about her
life and about growing up with her dad, Don Knotts. Karen says the show is
a tribute to her dad.
Crossroads of Learning, a company owned by Bob and
Nalini Lasiewicz, has just released
a new professional development online training course, “Tutoring
Foundations.” The course is a collaboration with the national Tutoring
Association and the Fielding Graduate University, and satisfies the
academic requirements for advanced tutor certification from the NTA.
Nalini is a part-time presenter for the Energy Exhibit youth tours at the
Science Center.
Mary Mirch has
received the first award ever given by the Health Services Association of
California Community Colleges (HSACCC). Mary was unanimously selected for
the honor, the HSACCC Exemplary Service Award for “helping to make the
impossible possible with generosity and expertise.” The HSACCC is a
statewide organization of nurses, mostly directors of health centers, who
have contributed to changing laws to enhance students' health care
benefits.
The GCC Patrons Club
would like to thank the campus community fortheir support of its
2006 fundraiser. Last year, the Patrons Club was able to award $20,000 in
scholarships and grants-in-aid to 62 worthy GCC students. The club looks
forward to ongoing support for the November, 2007 fundraiser at the
Castaway.
Armando Sanchez
(IT), won the 145 lb. featherweight championship by a knockout in
the second round at the Total Fighting Alliance—Conflict on the Coast
event at the Santa Monica Civic Center in February. Congratulations to
Armando!
English adjunct Ruth
Sowby says encouraging her students to write letters to the editor
of the Glendale News Press had an
unexpected result: she is now a photojournalist for the
Los Angeles Times. That is, she
writes and takes photos for a weekly society column in the
News Press.
Theatre Arts
Department accolades from the recent Kennedy Center American
College Theatre Festival:
Ryan Robbins
(Will Masters in the GCC production of William Inge’s
Bus Stop) was a semi-finalist in
the nationally recognized Irene Ryan scholarship competition.
Ken Gray
(Professor Emeritus) received honors for his play,
Something’s Missing, one of two
plays selected as a regional finalist for the David Mark Cohen Award.
Ken’s play has been sent to Washington D.C. to a panel of professional
readers and could garner publication, a cash prize, and reading at the
Association for Theatre in Higher Education conference this summer.
Jeanette D. Farr
(Theatre Arts faculty) was named as the Fellow for the Kennedy
Center American College Theatre Festival for region VIII. Individuals who
have given diligently to the causes of the Kennedy Center American College
Theatre Festival are named to the group of Fellows.
English instructor
Lyndane Yang's book-length manuscript,
Distant Shores, was one of five
finalists in the 2007 Iowa Short Fiction Awards competition. More than 400
writers entered the competition for debut short story collections.
