Please Stay Tuned: Our College is at Risk

by Mona Field

As of deadline, we are two days away from the infamous “May Revision” from Sacramento.   Barring a miracle (which is not expected, by the way), the state’s budget situation is not going to improve based on these revised figures.

Uncertainty and anxiety will be high as the Legislature wrestles through the tough choices facing our state.  It is predicted to be a long, hot, contentious summer in Sacramento.

Glendale College’s lobby team will be in Sacramento May 19 to fight the good fight—again.  But our hard work will not end at that point.

This is our last Chaparral for this academic year.  Whether you plan to be around during summer or not, please don’t let this be the last you read about the state budget and our college.

The most important thing our employees can do all summer long is to stay informed.  Read your e-mails (even during your vacation period, whenever that may be).  Keep informed, because what they do “up north” will impact your life and our students’ lives.

We must remain vigilant about budget cuts and fee increases.  We must be prepared to respond to our legislators and governor with our strong voices even during the usually quieter summer months.

On behalf of our students, on behalf of the future of California, we must not lose our fight to keep the doors open.

Keep the faith.  And enjoy your summer. &
