Speaking of the Senate
by John Queen, Academic Senate President

The Academic Senate is winding down from a productive spring.  Below you will find the highlights of the Senate’s actions thus far this semester.

Task forces

     The Senate voted to establish several task forces in the following areas in order to:

  • Provide student services support for students on probation or returning from dismissal;
  • Propose an instructional technology strategy to address online and hybrid student success;
  • Address high textbook prices and suggest best practices to assist students in securing affordable and academically sound textbooks;
  • Promote an environmental curriculum and environmental awareness across the curriculum and encourage the sharing of best practices in doing so among faculty;
  • Create a process for the adoption of new programs.  This would be a joint task force with Academic Affairs.

Reports

     The Senate adopted the following reports on:

  • Quality in Distance Education;
  • A Faculty Diversity Internship Program (both of these reports can be found at the Senate’s website).

     The Senate also considered a report on graduation requirements which suggested possible changes to our existing requirements.  This report was referred to the divisions and was then the subject of a Senate electorate meeting.  After considering this input, the Senate decided not to change the existing requirements.

Other

     In other actions, the Senate recommended:

  • A permanent 20% released time position for a sustainability coordinator;
  • The adoption of a resolution by the Academic Senate of the California Community Colleges on Advanced Placement examination credit for general education requirements (the relevant documents are on the Senate website);
  • To add language to the Faculty Handbook from Title 5, section 58108 which specifies uniform registration and enrollment procedures, including procedures by which students are added to courses;
  • A change of discipline from Computer Science to Computer Information Science for CS/IS 99, 100, 101, 102, 172, 174, 180, 185, 186, 190, 196, 197,  218, 255, 260, 261, 262, 263, 264, 265 and 266;
  • That the college should allocate time for faculty and staff to work on student learning outcome assessment cycles. The Senate also suggested that college hours be considered for these activities.

Next year’s Senate

     Senate meeting times next semester will be adjusted to the new block schedule, which means that the Senate will meet on the first and third Thursdays of the month from 1:40 – 3:00pm.

     This year’s Senate at-large/adjunct Senator election resulted in the re-election of Peggy Renner and Sid Kolpas.  Cindy Pollack and Cameron Hastings will be brand new Senators in the fall.  Divisions re-elected Andy Young, Randal Parker and Richard Cortes.  Fiona Virani will be the new Senator from Health Sciences.  A new executive committee will also be elected at our final meeting in May.

     Finally, Mike Scott will take over as president effective at the end of this semester.  Join me in wishing him good luck during his presidency! &
