Here are a few items that will be useful for Kaiser members. They are in no particular order, so read them all to see what’s happening with your Kaiser coverage:

  • Flu season is approaching. Kaiser will distribute free flu shots when the vaccine is available. Call 877-826-6358 for the latest info on availability, location, and hours of flu shot clinics.

  • Did you know Kaiser provides 24/7/365 crisis intervention? If you have unusual stress, anxiety or worry, call 800-900-3277 for a trained Kaiser social worker or clinical nurse specialist. They can help you at the moment and then refer you for further support utilizing your benefits.

  • Women: Those annoying bladder infections can be treated over the phone. If you have been treated for cystitis within the past few years, and you are certain you are suffering from those symptoms, call 800-954-8000 and ask for a phone prescription. You can pick up your antibiotics the same day without seeing a doctor.

  • Don’t waste your money! Please use Urgent Care for same-day important medical needs, but don’t go to the Emergency Room for anything but life-threatening events. There will be a $50 charge for misuse of the ER. Urgent Care is right next door to the ER; just ask and make sure you go to the right place. Urgent Care fees are your usual medical appointment co-pay, and Urgent Care is open 5 a.m. to midnight.

  • Speaking of co-pay, starting January 1, 2002, your doctor visit co-pay will go to $5 per visit. This is a Kaiser-mandated change, not to be blamed on our unions or negotiations process. (See related article about premium cost increases.)

That’s the latest for now. Remember to eat right, exercise and enjoy your good health!
