Good News and Still More
Good News!
by
Kathy Holland, 2nd Vice President, GCC Guild
Perhaps
you have heard the phrase “I’ve got some good news and some bad
news—which would you like to hear first?”
But not this month! There’s only good news to report this month!
The first good news (and you may have heard already, if you’re on
the e-mail list)—is that parity money will be distributed as early as
November. The state budget
has allocated $50.8 million to all campuses statewide.
The total allocation for our campus is $702,164.
According to Ron Nakasone, 9.28 percent of our allocation will go to fringe
benefits (which includes STRS, Medicare, and Workers Comp), while the rest
will appear as an 11.39 percent increase in your salary. And yes, it will be retroactive to the beginning of the fall
2003 semester.
The other good news is that outgoing Governor Davis has signed into
law AB 654. This bill,
sponsored by Jackie Goldberg, intends to improve working conditions for
part-time faculty. Among the
provisions: that part-time faculty should be informed six weeks in advance
of assignments and that they be paid for the first week of an assignment
when the class is cancelled less than two weeks before the start of
semester. It also allows the
opportunity to participate in the full range of on-campus responsibilities
including committee work, textbook selection, and departmental and
campus-wide meetings, and be paid for
that involvement! The
bill also requires that part-time salaries be proportionate to the
salaries paid to full-time faculty with similar qualifications who do the
same work. The bill also
forbids campuses from converting full-time positions into several
part-time positions. This
bill will go into effect on January 1, 2004.
I can’t think of anything better to share!
Hope you’re having a good semester…v
