MILESTONES

Many of the Center for Students with Disabilities (CSD) faculty specialists are members of the California Association for Postsecondary Education and Disability (CAPED).  Three of the specialists have just completed their terms of leadership on CAPED's executive board. Tina Andersen-Wahlberg, HTC, has led the Access Technology Interest group for the last two years and served a two-year training internship before assuming the leadership.
Dr. Susan Hoehn, IAC, has led the Learning Disabilities Interest group for the last two years.  The LD group is the largest of the special interests groups.  Dr. Lee Miller Parks, APE, has led the Adapted Physical Education interest group for the last four years.  Tina, Susan and Lee have been responsible for planning pre-conferences and special workshops and arranging for certifications in their particular disciplines.

Professor Osheen Keshishian, from EOPS, participated in the 2nd International Conference on Literature, organized by the Armenian Writers Union of Armenia, Oct. 10 to 15 in Armenia. The theme was "National/Ethnic Identity in Literature." Keshishian spoke on "Ethnic Identity Issues Among Armenian-American Writers Who Write in English." There were 20 speakers from Armenia, the US, Belgium, France, Lebanon, Syria, Iran, Russia, and Georgia.

Crossroads of Learning, an online training company owned by Bob and Nalini Lasiewicz, has added a new course custom designed for academic Learning Centers and supplemental educational services providers (SES).  The course provides comprehensive tutor training which qualifies graduates for basic tutor certification from the National Tutoring Association.

Paris Noori, of our Counseling Department, is a regular guest on a talk radio show on KFI 670 AM. She has been a regular guest on this program for the last three years, talking about higher education across the country as well as in California. Colleagues Kevin Meza and Ramona Barrio-Sotillo recently joined her to discuss AB540 and Proposition 92.

Leigh Podgorski's film We Are Still Here, the story of Katherine Siva Saubel and the Cahuilla Indians of Southern California, has been designated an Official Selection of the 32nd annual American Indian Film Festival. The film was screened on November 6, 2007 at the Landmark Embarcadero Center in San Francisco. Chaparral wants you!

Unique Job Offer!

The Chaparral is seeking talented and committed individuals (no experience necessary) for the position of correspondent.

Write for the Chaparral!

Correspondents would manage and implement internal and external communications (meaning correspondents would commit themselves to write at least one article a year on a topic if interest to the college community).

Writers could represent their own interests, constituents’ interests (such as a member of the Academic Senate or a Guild officer could), community groups’ interests (such as departments, divisions, work areas), as well as the interest of the public at large.

Hiring the Best!

Preferred qualifications: most important, candidates should be pro-active and willing to take the initiative on articles and features, should work well under pressure, have the ability to prioritize, met deadlines, and demonstrate flexibility (in other words, get the article in on time).

We are particularly interested in finding younger faculty who, although interested, feel that they don’t have a lot of time to devote to campus issues, so they haven’t run for Senate of Guild offices, but they could find the time to devote to a single article in the course of a year, and thereby become involved in campus issues whether they be instructional, political, or social (maybe even parking).

Building Character!

The Chaparral is an equal opportunity employer, offering its writers no compensation, no perquisites, no benefits package (but if you work here you have them already); yet we do offer an extraordinary opportunity for professional development to those who are interested.

If curious, concerned or committed, contact the editor, Mona Field, at x5341 or send an e-mail to mfield@glendale.edu
