A New Council
Greetings and welcome to a new school year. I would like to take this opportunity to introduce the new Classified Council board: Hoover Zariani, vice president; Jessica LoGuercio, secretary; Nancy Brace, treasurer; Merrilee Ahaus, Leticia Estrada, Vera McGillivray, Jenny McMahon and Judy Razze, members-at-large.

This past May, I was elected as the new president of the Classified Council. I have to admit that when I accepted the nomination, I didn’t think I would be chosen. I have not worked on this campus long and felt not many people knew who I was. I guess I was wrong. Before I knew it, Wendy Grove was calling me to say, "Congratulations! Here’s what you get to do as president." My first reaction was that of excitement, which quickly turned to fear and anxiety. "Who am I to do this?" I asked myself. "I haven’t even had the chance to attend most of the activities that I am supposed to organize." I quickly realized after my first meeting with the Council board that I was not alone. I have leaned heavily on them for their insights and ideas. Without their help and support, Classified Institute Day would not have been the success that it was. And now my fear and anxiety have turned to anticipation and excitement as I look forward to this year. I want the Council to be more than "the party people." I want us to do more than just plan three social gatherings per year and meet just once a month. The Council board is currently working on fun activities for classified staff that will take place throughout the school year.

You can help support these activities by becoming a member of the Classified Council. Membership is only $7 per year. Members are able to participate in Classified Institute Day and the end-of-the-year Classified Picnic at no charge, receive a discount for the annual Holiday Party, receive a birthday card with a lottery ticket, and help sponsor scholarships for Glendale College students. If you have any questions about membership, you can contact our treasurer, Nancy Brace, in the Instructional Services Office.

I want to encourage all classified staff to become more involved in the activities we will hold during this coming year. I realized at Classified Institute Day that there were many faces I did not know. I am sure I am not the only one. We here at Glendale Community College are a family. I understood that more than ever at the Remembrance Ceremony that was held on September 14. Yet we don’t know who all of those family members are. By becoming involved, you will get to know one another and we will grow closer together as a community. If I have not

had the chance to meet you yet, I want to encourage you to stop by my office in AD 217A and introduce yourself. Please also feel free to e-mail me at hglenn@glendale.cc.ca.us or call me at x5767 with any ideas you would like to suggest for activities the Classified Council can sponsor.

I look forward to seeing you around campus.
