The five individuals and one team that
make up the inaugural class for the Glendale Community College Athletic
Hall of Fame aren't short on accomplishments, both at the college and in
the world of sports. But one thing they all share is that this college
played an important part in their lives.
That common theme will be celebrated on
Sunday, February 3, 2002 at 4 p.m. at the J. Walter Smith Student
Center, when Cathy Ferguson, Donna Mayhew, Carl Boldt, Chuck Gibson, J.
Walter Smith and the 1985 Football Team are honored as the first group
enshrined into the hall of fame.
Mayhew and Boldt are being honored in the
outstanding athlete category. Mayhew was the state champion in the
javelin in 1980 and competed in the 1988 and 1992 Olympics. Boldt, a
team member from 1951 to 1953, is still regarded as one of the best ever
to play basketball for the Vaqueros. He later played on the undefeated
1956 NCAA Champion University of San Francisco team with Bill Russell.
Ferguson, a two-time gold medalist in
swimming at the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo and a student-athlete at Glendale
in 1966-67, is being honored as a pillar of achievement. Gibson coached
the Vaqueros men's tennis team for almost two decades and was also a
social science teacher for many years.
Smith has been a longtime supporter of
athletics at the college, as a track and field coach from 1947 to 1954
and as the dean of student activities for 37 years until he retired in
1992. The 1985 football team won the Potato Bowl that year and finished
the season ranked No. 5 in the nation.
