ALL THE RIGHT MOVES?

Return to the Chaparral homepage

by Lynn McMurrey, President, Guild

The issues facing the Guild as this issue goes to print are:

  • How we will be remunerated for the six extra days of work required of us by the Chancellor's office. This move by Sacramento puts the District in violation of the Guild contract and several state and federal laws. I hope this issue will have been settled by the time you read these words.

  • How many hours of flex obligation will be excused for the necessary rewriting of syllabi and study materials. Dr. Davitt stated that all flex would be excused. The Guild, at the insistence of the membership, objected to this offer, and we are now negotiating. This issue I also hope to be old news by the time you read this.

  • An issue that probably will not be settled yet, but one in which the Guild's position is very clear, is the issue of the funds allocated by the State for part-time equity. The Chancellor has allocated $57 million to be divided among community college districts based on the actual FTES served by the district the previous year. The money cannot be used for any other purpose, and cannot be used to pay for office hours. There is a separate fund for part-time office hours.

  • Part-time office hours are our last major negotiations issue. The Guild is trying to lower the numbers of hours necessary for adjunct faculty to qualify for office hours. There is an increase in the Governor's budget for part time office hours and a back-fill to pay for the previous year’s obligations.

  • There is an ongoing dialogue with the District on myriad issues concerning the "New" calendar. These issues seem to be multiplying like …(you supply the noun). Whenever a conflict with the contract is identified, it is negotiated as a "mutual" by both teams.

As you can see, the negotiating team is working very hard on your behalf. Negotiation has become a year-round task, and we are very lucky to have faculty willing to put in the necessary time and energy.

Finally, you have access to a contract that is up to date and actually reflects what has been negotiated and accepted by the membership. This document can be found on the Guild web site at: www.glendale.cc.ca.us/guild. You will also find a section for contract items that have been agreed upon by the Guild and the District but not yet voted on by the membership.
