TECHNOLOGY

Return to the Chaparral homepage

by Michael Coler, Information Technology Services

One of the greatest challenges facing this institution is getting technology into 160 classrooms. $11,000 is required to equip each classroom to facilitate Power Point and other cutting-edge technologies. Zero classrooms are free because they are all booked. It costs less than $400 to equip a classroom with older technology — the Overhead Projector. ALL of the college's classrooms are so equipped. In these financially challenged times issues regarding fiscal responsibility need to be addressed.

When used creatively, the pedagogy of The Overhead Projector presentation is nearly the same as that of the Video Projector offering. The older technology is cheap and reliable; the new technology is expensive, requiring substantial training and support from already overloaded technical staff.
Several instructors have come to the Operations Center because they have become dependent upon new technology to the extent that an equipment failure makes it "impossible" for them to teach. There is something very wrong here.

I would like to engage in dialog about these concerns. Please do not e-mail me. Drop by my office and let's talk. (Does anyone recall how to use a "reveal?")
