Lots of News

The September 21st Best Part-time Faculty Conference Ever was a terrific success! The organizing committee of David Milroy (a part-timer at several San Diego and Orange County community colleges) and myself really managed to get the word out. There were attendees from as far away as Santa Barbara and San Diego who listened with interest to speakers from as far a field as Sacramento. Cliff Liehe from City College of San Francisco did a wonderful presentation on how to calculate your STRS Defined Benefits if you are a part-timer. Ron Nakasone, our own Glendale College controller, explained the differences between the STRS Cash Balance plan and the STRS Defined Benefits program. If you would like to see some of the information regarding the STRS DB plan that Cliff Liehe brought with him, you will be able to find it on the Glendale College Guild website at www.glendale.edu/guild under Issues. He will also be authoring a six-part series on retirement planning in upcoming issues of the AFT Perspective newspaper.

The parity money for this year will not be part of your first check from the district in October. The reason for this is that the amount of money earmarked for raising the pay of part-timers closer to that of full-timers has remained the same as last year, at approximately $785,000. Last year because we wanted the money distributed as expeditiously as possible, we (the district and the Guild) decided to add this money directly to the B-2 salary schedule only. This is the flat-rate schedule that most part-timers are paid from. The Guild and the district now believe that some adjunct teaching faculty who are paid on the B-1 schedule were overlooked and therefore should receive this year's money. Reapportioning the finite amount that we have is taking longer than expected, and we want to be sure that all part-timers benefit from the new equity funding.

Our yearly pay raise, which technically begins in July, has also not as yet been negotiated between the Guild and the district. This additional money and the parity money will be sent to part-timers as retroactive checks later in the school year. Hopefully in time for Christmas!

Keep your eyes open for news regarding the Guild's latest part-timer reopener: rehire rights. Regular updates will be covered in this column.
