CLASSIFIED COUNCIL CORNER
by Henan Joof, Classified Council President

Henan Joof

It is with a sense of great excitement and optimism that I say hello and introduce myself as the 2007-2008 Classified Council President. I would like to begin by reporting that since taking office in mid-June, the current board has not missed a beat and has set out to maintain the longstanding tradition of being a key contributor to this campus.

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce the new Classified Council board: Kit Crawford, Vice President; Merrilee Ahaus, Secretary; Patricia Chamroonrat, Treasurer; and Faye Henson, Cori Herbert, Wendy Grove, Jenny McMahon and Olga Tovar, Members-at-Large. We will endeavor to work as hard as the previous board and keep the GCC campus alive with fun events and fundraising efforts.

I hope that by now many of you have received and returned the membership brochure to us, but if not, please feel free to contact any of us to get a copy. Members of the Classified Council Board are volunteers, and we rely on you to make every event a success. The small $8 membership fee does not allow us to fund all our philanthropic activities, so your support of our fundraising events is greatly appreciated.

Besides Classified Institute Day, which we had the privilege of co-sponsoring with the CSEA, a few upcoming events that you'll notice us participating in are the See's Candy drive, Classified Week, the Annual Retirement/Recognition Event and the Classified Holiday Party.  Our November meeting's guest speaker, Dr. Mary Mirch, will do a presentation about her recent visit to Antarctica.

At our end-of-the-year party in June, we announced the 2007 student scholarship recipients and they were: Lilian Shabani, Iveta Markova, Polin Nikolay, and Camilo Villegas. As I conclude this article, I would like to commend every classified member here at Glendale College for the fascinating work they do day in and day out for the students. Never lose sight of our promise to them. I will end with words you should all be familiar with, as I have borrowed them from my predecessor Kit Crawford: I salute you all for your hard work and commitment to Glendale College.
