CSEA Looking to the Future
Classified
Institute Day kicked off a
new academic year with a promising increase in the student
enrollment and a brand new parking structure. With over 1,000
parking stalls, both students and employees have better parking
arrangements. Further, all classified employees who participated in
the off-campus shuttle program received two years of service added
to their years of employment on the parking assignment seniority
list.
This is
an important year for the classified staff. It is an election year
for the CSEA, and newly selected leaders will set the course for our
chapter for the next two years. Being a CSEA officer conveys great
responsibility. The CSEA Executive Board represents your concerns,
opinions and most importantly, votes on vital college issues on your
behalf. Chapter meetings over the past school year have seen a
marked improvement in attendance, with larger numbers of classified
employees participating in shared governance. Our focus this year
is: assessing our chapter, involving more people in various seminars
and workshops offered by the CSEA, negotiating re-openers with the
District, and reworking the roles and responsibilities of the
negotiation team.
CSEA
joined forces with the Guild for the Community College Initiative,
Proposition 92. It qualified for the February 2008 election, and we
need to raise the necessary resources to help pass this important
initiative. If Proposition 92 passes, community colleges will be
separated from K-12 funding and student fees will be lowered to $15
per unit, which will prevent fees from increasing at a rate faster
than the growth in personal incomes. I am encouraging all
classified employees to make a contribution to this important
cause. CSEA is planning fund raising events, and our chapter will
ask the CSEA Political Action committee for a contribution. More
information about Proposition 92 will be given at the
Chapter meetings.
In Unity,
Saodat Aziskhanova
