The present is so busy, how can we have time
to plan the future?
Although some of us live our personal lives day to day, a public college
does not have that option. We are required by various “powers that be” to think
into the future, imagining the college we will be in the years and decades to
come. Here is an introduction to the group of colleagues who are giving up
substantial “present time” in order to think about our college’s future. Please
thank them for their hard work when you see them. And when asked to participate
in some small portion of this
immense task, please consider taking on your share.
An introduction from our INSTITUTIONAL
PLANNING Group
(with more to come)
The new accreditation standards have set expectations for all of us,
which include the linkage of planning, accreditation, program review and
student learning outcomes (SLOs) with the budget process. As a result of
these expectations, the following group started discussing issues
related to mutual goals: Peggy Renner, Master Planning; Jill Lewis,
Accreditation; Carol Paxton, Program Review; Alice Mecom, Student
Learning Outcomes; and Ed Karpp, Institutional Planning & Research. This
team decided to call themselves the “Core 5” and started meeting in the
spring and through the summer with Dr. Dawn Lindsay, the college
Accreditation Liaison Officer, to develop ways of integrating efforts to
work together effectively and meet the standards for our 2010
Accreditation site visit.
The team has identified the
following tasks to be addressed:
· Revise
the Mission Statement Update the Educational Master Plan
· Streamline
and integrate Program Review with planning and budget processes
· Implement
Student Learning Outcomes and Assessment Cycles (SLOAC)
· Launch
a release time position for a faculty Accreditation Coordinator
· Review
the new accreditation standards and assessment of compliance
· Discuss
ideas for the new Strategic Master Plan
· Modify
budget and planning processes to reflect integrated institutional
planning
· Share
information through the Institutional Planning Dialogue Committee
The goal is to improve
institutional effectiveness by engaging in a systematic cycle of
integrated planning, resource allocation, implementation, and
re-evaluation to create a culture of research and evidence supporting
all college decision-making processes.
The Accrediting Commission
encourages campus dialogue. A new Institutional Planning Dialogue
Committee has been formed, joining the Core 5, the three vice
presidents, and area leaders to coordinate planning activities and
improve the information flow by sharing what is happening on campus.
This group does not make decisions or set policy. Please watch for
events and information sessions that will help you understand and
participate in our college’s future plans.
