Announcing a second book by Dr. Denise Blue: Out There, The Homeless Years, by Denise B. Gayla K. Chisholm’s first grandchild, Ryleigh S. Chisholm, was born on Friday, July 17, 2009, weighing 7 lbs. 8 oz. with lots of dark hair!  “I have two sons, so having a granddaughter is even that much more special!  Our precious little one has finally arrived and her grandma couldn't be happier!”

GCC English instructor Darrell Costa has co-written an award-winning film set in a Sri Lankan fishing village, where a determined young woman tries to overcome superstition, the inequities of a traditional feudal system, and the constant cycle of poverty.  Dheevari Fisherman’s Daughter won the People’s Choice Award at the Dubai International Film Festival.

One of Dennis Doyle's many children, Michael, graduated from UC Santa Cruz with a degree in film and digital media. He is employed! He was snatched up by the local Glendale Apple Store to be one of their in-house geniuses specializing in media software.

Congratulations to Jeanette Farr, of GCC’s Theatre Arts department, and Warren Harkins, who were married on August 15, 2009 at Cambria Pines Lodge in Cambria, California. They will be honeymooning in Banff, Canada.

"Out of College, money spent See no future, pay no rent All the money's gone, nowhere to go..." Nancy Getty is exceedingly happy to report that her daughter, Amanda, has found somewhere to go. Amanda has secured a FLAS (U.S. Dept. of Ed., Foreign Language and Area Studies) fellowship to begin graduate studies at the University of Michigan's Center for Russian & East European Studies. The best part is that 'Manda will be living right across the street from Zingerman's Deli in Kerrytown—worth the trip!

Brenda Jones, Library & Learning Resources Director, graduated from Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena on Saturday, June 13 with a Master of Arts in Theology. She began her part-time studies at Fuller in January 2005 and was a full-time student while on sabbatical from GCC during the 2005-2006 academic year.

Congratulations to Zohara Kaye, librarian, and her husband Jeff Gardner, the proud parents of twins: Andrew Franklin (4 lbs., 4 oz.), born June 22, 2009 at 6:09 p.m. and Madeline Elizabeth (5 lbs., 3 oz.), born at 6:12 p.m.

The DSL family of the Garfield Campus is thrilled to announce that their own Iveta Ovsepyan gave birth to her second son, Aram Hakopyan, on July 15, 2009 (weight 7.3 lbs., height 19”).  Congratulations to Iveta and Hovik on their newborn son.

Brigid Reiner, eldest daughter of Christine Reiner (Purchasing), has graduated from UCLA with a BA in Geography. Brigid was a GCC transfer student. Go Vaqueros!

Hasmik Sarkissian’s son, Gevik Sarkissian, graduated from UCLA with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics, on June 12, 2009. He plans to continue his education and get his Master's degree in Computer Science.

Former GCC Public Information Officer Merry Shelburne's second book, Silent Words: Animals Speak from the Heart, was published in May. For those interested in animal communication, the book is available at http://www.atlasbooks.com/marktplc/02616.htm. Her first book, a public relations textbook, is in its second edition. Merry and her husband, Dave, met at GCC and recently celebrated their 41st wedding anniversary. They raise Golden Retrievers and are active in dog agility.
