Business Education

The Business Education office is located on the second floor of the Garfield Campus.  Students may be required to demonstrate English proficiency equivalent to ESL-IV for class enrollment.  The Business Education program’s primary purpose is to help students develop skills that are critical for success in the modern workplace.  In addition, the Business Education program offers a bridge to further studies in college/university credit programs or technical schools.  Students who successfully complete a business program will receive a certificate of completion.  The vocational Certificate of Completion programs have been approved by the Chancellor’s Office of California.  For further information, please call 818-240-1000, ext. 5690.

  • Business/Office Skills – Course Descriptions
    • OBT 011 Beginning Keyboarding
      • This is an individualized class that covers keyboarding Lessons 1 – 20 by touch. All students work on computers. Accuracy and speed development is offered. Students may enter at any time.
    • OBT 012 Intermediate Keyboarding
      • This is an individualized class that covers keyboarding Lessons 21 – 80 by touch through the production of business documents. Students work on computers and learn MS Word as they advance. Extensive accuracy and speed development is offered. Students may enter at any time.
    • OBT 013 Advanced Keyboarding
      • This is an individualized class that applies keyboarding and MS Word skills to business documents through the application of advanced features in specialized situations. Class covers Lessons 81- 120. Extensive accuracy and speed development is offered. Students may enter at any time.
    • OBT 021 Business Math and Calculators
      • This course improves basic math skills and teaches calculators by touch and calculator functions.
    • OBT 022 Beginning Account Clerk
      • Students will study the full accounting cycle in Chapters 1 – 16, financial statements, payroll, accounts receivable/payable in manual and QuickBooks and Peachtree formats.
    • OBT 023 Advanced Account Clerk
      • Students will study advanced accounting Chapters 17 – 24, financial statements, uncollectibles, notes payable/receivable, accruals, inventory, advanced accounts receivable/payable in manual and QuickBooks and Peachtree formats.
    • OBT 031 Business Writing: Email
      • This course covers email writing including English essentials and email etiquette rules.
    • OBT 032 Business Writing: Memos
      • This course focuses on interoffice memorandum writing. English essentials and other forms of workplace documents such as news releases.
    • OBT 033 Business Letter Writing
      • This course covers business letter composition, English essentials, and production of other workplace documents such as agendas and minutes.
    • OBT 034 Filing Fundamentals
      • This course covers the use of indexing rules to file alphabetically, numerically, geographically, and by subject. Timed exercise practices, handouts, and quizzes are designed to assist students to prepare for employment tests and to accurately perform on-the-job filing. Computerized software provides hands-on review filing fundamentals.
    • OBT 035 On-the-Job Communication
      • This course emphasizes workplace interaction and avoiding barriers to communication as well as adapting to a variety of personal communication styles. Included are communication strategies for getting along with coworkers, supervisors, and clients. Other topics covered are decision making, problem solving, and overcoming negative behaviors in teams/groups.
    • OBT 040 21st Century Employment Strategies

      • This class covers resumes (including e-resumes) and cover letters, interviewing techniques, finding the job you want (including Internet search), understanding the legalities of personnel paperwork, pre-employment testing, and how to handle coworkers, stressful situations, etc.

    • OBT 050 Customer Service
      • You will be introduced to the concepts of internal and external customers; customer expectations and satisfaction; effective customer communications; and how to productively handle conflict, stress and teamwork.
    • OBT 055 Office Equipment

      • This class prepares you for life in the office through hand-on use of office equipment, such as:  the World Wide Web, copiers, faxes, printers, shredders, cutters, punchers and more.

    • OBT 061 Medical Front Office
      • Topics covered under this program include a comprehensive understanding of medical front office duties: medical terminology, front office procedures, medical billing and coding, medical transcription and Medisoft.
    • OBT 062 Dental Front Office
      • Topics covered under this program include a comprehensive understanding of dental front office duties: dental terminology, office procedures, billing and transcription techniques, and Dental Software.
