How to enroll
New ESL Students
- Step 1: Test! The placement test takes about one hour
and can be taken at the Assessment Center on the Main Campus at 1500
N. Verdugo or at the Garfield Campus at 1122 E.
Garfield. You must first make an appointment in person
to take the placement test; you may not
call to make an appointment. You need to make an appointment at
the site you wish to be tested between these hours:
Monday-Thursday, 8:00 am - 8:00 pm, and Fridays, 9:00 am- 4:00 pm. There is
often a waiting list to take the placement test at the Garfield Campus, so we
suggest you go and make an appointment at the Assessment Center (SF
112) on the
Main Campus. (Click here for a map to the
Main
Campus).
-
Step 2: Garfield students may pick up test results at the
Garfield Campus. Students who wish to study on the Main Campus may pick up test results
at SF 112 and receive a class
assignment at the Noncredit ESL office at SF 120. If there is no room
in the class you want, you will be placed on a waiting list.
- Step 3: Registration for all classes is done
online. After testing, go to
www.glendale.edu/continuinged and check for enrollment
dates. Once enrollment is open, click on the noncredit ESL class
schedule and choose the class you wish to take. When you
register, you will print out a confirmation form that you must
sign and bring with you to class along with your test placement
form. Be sure to register for the level you tested into.
Continuing ESL Students/Credit ESL Students
In
order to register again in an ESL class, you must have an ESL
Placement Recommendation Form from the teacher of the previously
taken class. If you do not have this form, you will have to take
the ESL placement test. Students who are already enrolled in ESL
classes for credit at GCC do not need to be tested. You need to
bring your credit test scores and see Marie Bartholomew at the
Garfield Campus.
Waiting Lists
When the class enrollment limit has been reached, the additional names
are placed on a waiting list in the Noncredit ESL office.
Persons whose names are on the waiting list will be notified by mail, in order,
when openings in such classes are available.
Attendance
When students register for a class, it is their responsibility to
attend regularly. Classes will be discontinued if attendance becomes
irregular or small. After three consecutive absences in a class with a
waiting list, students will be dropped from the class and their names will
be placed at the bottom of the waiting list. Non-credit adult classes are
established for either high school graduates or students 18 years of age
or more. Students 16-17 years must have their high school principal ’s
approval to attend, or verification of daytime employment from their employer on
the firm’s letterhead stationery.
