If you enjoy working with people and have an interest in healthcare, you may find that Phlebotomy can lead to an interesting and rewarding career. A Phlebotomist draws blood from patients in hospitals and medical labs, explaines procedures, and practices safe techniques for storing blood samples. This course combines 40 hours of classroom instruction with a 40 hour phlebotomy externship to provide students with a complete learning experience. You will become proficient in venipuncture with syringe, vacutainer, butterfly and fingerstick methods. The program meets the requirements set forth by the State of California, and has been approved for our partner Boston Reed College in compliance with Title 17, Section 1034, of the California Administrative Code. Successfully completing this program entitles you to take a state-approved national phlebotomy examination. Passing that exam allows candidates to apply to receive phlebotomy certification by the State of California. Please note: Completion of this program does not guarantee passing of an exam, state certification, or employment.
Lectures include but are not limited to the theory, anatomy and terminology pertaining to the circulatory system, specimen collection, risk factors and complications and quality assurance in specimen collection. Practical instruction provides hands-on training in venipuncture technique with procedures verified through a skills check-off system. The 40-hour externship includes at minimum 50 successful venipunctures and 10 skin punctures. Upon completion of the program the student will receive a certificate of completion and become eligible for certification in the State of California as a Certified Phlebotomy Technician 1 (CPT 1).
