ESL Students
Does everybody have to take the Credit ESL Placement test?
Yes, it is required by the State of California. For more information see your counselor
or go to Academic
Counseling.
What if I don't agree with the results of my placement examination?
Since the test is usually accurate in its diagnosis, your test results should place you
at the right level. However, if you still disagree with the test results, you may request
a re-test from the Credit ESL Division at ext. 5511.
"I don't know which classes to take!"
Make an appointment with your counselor. If you are an F-1 Visa student, please see
your international student advisor. If your native language is not English and you are not
an F-1 Visa student, you may get help from EOPS.
What classes does the ESL Division offer?
You may find all ESL classes offered under the Class Schedule booklet heading,
"English As A Second Language." You can pick up a copy at the Information desk
at the entrance of the Administration building.

How do I register for ESL classes?
After you have taken the ESL placement test and determined the ESL classes you are
required to take, you may register for classes at the Admissions Office at
room AD 139 in the Administration Building.
Should I take a Listening/Speaking class?
If you are placed in a listening/speaking class through the ESL placement test, it is
strongly recommended that you take that class. Each listening/speaking class offers
different learning tools such as note taking skills to help you become better equipped to
participate in college wide classes.
"I need to get tapes made for my ESL class. How do I do this? Where do I go?
You may get tapes made at the ESL/Foreign Language Lab in SG 135. Call ext. 5398 for
more information. Bring a 90 minute cassette tape to the lab for each tape you need
copied.
What if I fail a class?
If you receive a "D" or and "F" you may take the class without any
special permission if it is for the second time. If you fail a class twice, you must pick
up the form, "Petition for a Third Repeat", at the Admissions office (AD 139).
Follow the instructions on the form and obtain the necessary signatures needed for
approval for a repeat of a class for the third time.
Where I can help for tutoring?
The Tutoring Center on the second floor of the Administration building(AD 232) offers
free service for any GCC student who needs assistance. You may walk in and request a tutor
or call ext. 5333.
