Were it left to me to decide whether we should have government without newspapers,
or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate to prefer the latter.
Thomas Jefferson's strong belief in a free press, reflected in the 1st Amendment to the
Constitution, sets this country apart from all others. Our right to know and to read is one of our
most important freedoms and one that the founders knew required constant vigilance and an educated
public.
