If you enjoy learning, listening to or any aspect of language, taking our
linguistics course should be of interest to you.
In this intro to language and linguistics course, we discuss the following:
phonetics and phonology (the sounds and sound patterns of a language); morphology
(how words are formed and introduced into a language); syntax (how sentences are
created); semantics (the meanings of the words and sentences once they are put
together); acquisition (the difference in how people learn their first - second
languages); sociolinguistics (how groups of people influence language use and
meaning); and historical linguists (how language changes over time).
That's only some of the fascinating language-oriented material you will read
about and discuss in this class. While the course is conducted and centers on
English, examples from many other languages will be discussed. Whether you only
speak English (and English doesn't have to be your first language to do well) or
speak several languages, this class should prove to be a beneficial and an
entertaining addition to your class schedule.
