Services and Accommodations
If you are eligible for services, a Learning Specialist
will recommend the accommodations she feels are appropriate for you, based
on your specific educational difficulties. The following is a list of
accommodations that may possibly be recommended.
For Note
Taking
For Reading
- Kurzweil 3000 Computer software located in the IAC and the Hi-Tech
Center. When student scans textbook, text is displayed and read
aloud by the computer. Kurzweil also includes a dictionary,
thesaurus, highlighting and outlining capabilities.
- Colored Overlays For students with certain visual processing
difficulties or scotopic sensitivity. Transparencies in various
colors serve to reduce the contrast created by black print on white
paper, thus assisting the student in tracking the words by "holding them
in place."
- Recordings for the Blind and Dyslexic Students textbooks are read
aloud and a CD is burned of the recording.
- Enlarged Print Sometimes makes reading easier for students who
have difficulty with visual discrimination or perceptual organization
problems.
- Learning Center Computer assisted instruction in reading skills.
Students can work independently to improve their reading fluency.
For Writing
- Franklin Talking Dictionary Handheld device for correct spellings,
definitions, and synonyms. Information is displayed and read
aloud.
- Franklin English/Spanish Talking Dictionary Handheld device for
pronunciations, spellings, and definitions. Information is
displayed and read aloud.
- Kurzweil 3000 Student uses computer for compositions and writing
assignments. Kurzweil software reads back what student has
written. Also has a dictionary, thesaurus, spell checker, and
alerts to commonly confused words.
- Word processor Including spell checker and thesaurus.
- Inspiration Computer software that assists a student in organizing
thoughts to complete a writing assignment.
- Tutoring By signing up for St Dv 143, students have access to IAC
staff for assistance with writing assignments.
- Learning Center Computer assisted instruction in many English
writing skills. Students can work independently to improve their
writing abilities.
For Math
- Math Lab Student and staff tutors are available to answer
questions students may have about their math assignments.
- Tutoring in the IAC By signing up for St Dv 143, students have
access to IAC staff for assistance with math. Tutors are trained
to work with students with disabilities, and assistance is more
personalized.
- Videotapes The tutors can show you how to access videos to accompany most of the
textbooks used in the math classes at GCC.
- Computer software Available in the IAC for all math levels, so
students may develop their math skills.
- Learning Center Computer assisted instruction in many levels of
math. Students can work independently to improve their math
skills.
For Test
Taking
- Test Proctoring As a service to the faculty who may not be able to
provide test accommodations themselves. Following IAC procedures,
students can make arrangements to take their tests in the
distraction-reduced environment of the IAC.
- Extended Time Either one and a half or two times the amount of
time given to the rest of the class is allotted, depending on the
students disability and the type of test given. No more than four
hours is given for final exams.
- Enlarged print or reduced number of items presented on a page for
students with visual perception difficulties or limited vision.
- Spell checker For classes that are not teaching spelling.
- Calculator or Multiplication Tables For most math classes
- Reader, taped tests, or tests read by Kurzweil For students with
reading difficulties, the appropriate method will be selected.
- Scribe For students with writing difficulties, a staff member will
write test answers as dictated by the student.
- Proofreader For students who have difficulty with visual tracking,
tests will be reviewed for "careless" errors. Students may be
directed to reexamine their answers, or to fix a bubbling error on a
scantron.
- Breaks For students with physical impairments or difficulty
focusing for prolonged periods of time. Tests may be split so
students can take a break after completing each portion.
For Completing Graduation Requirements
- Academic counseling Students will be assigned an academic
counselor from the CSD for assistance with planning classes.
- Reduced course load Because it takes students with disabilities
more than the average amount of time to study for most classes, they
benefit by taking fewer classes per semester.
- Priority registration Increases students ability to select
instructors, classrooms, and schedules that best fit the needs created
by their educational difficulties.
