Welcome to the English Lab

The English Lab is a quiet computer lab where students can do research and complete assignments. The English Lab is open to any student who needs to use a computer for their academic success.

All students are welcome.  You do not need to be enrolled in an English class to use the lab.  Students who are taking English and ESL classes may receive hourly credit for the time they spend here but we are open to all students who need to use a computer. We are here to help you.  If you are unfamiliar with computers or feel uncomfortable using them, please come by.  Our friendly and patient staff will be more than happy offer you assistance.

The lab has two rooms with Apple Macintosh computers in the front room and Windows OS PCs in the reserve lab classroom.  Instructors can reserve the second room by request.  The reserve lab classroom recently underwent a top-to-bottom renovation with an installation of new state-of-the-art small-footprint PCs with flat panel monitors.

All the computers in the lab have a standard installation of the following software:
-We have Microsoft Word that will allow you to type your papers and edit them with an online spell-checker, grammar checker, as well as a dictionary and thesaurus.
-We also offer Excel, an industry standard spread sheet program, which will help you produce professional looking charts and diagrams.
-PowerPoint is also available, for creating presentations.  Professors frequently use PowerPoint for their class lectures.
-all computers are also equipped with Internet Explorer to allow you access to online materials.  In addition to the many resources that are available though the Internet, the Lab is part of the campus network, allowing a free
link to many materials in our GCC Library not available off campus, such as the Los Angeles Times, LexisNexis Academic, countless online newspapers, journals,  and magazines .  These materials should aid you with your assignments and provide you with the most up-to-date information for your research.  Many GCC instructors also  have published their class materials online and have left assignments on class web sites.
-recently installed is an application called Inspiration, which is an innovative outlining and diagraming program, especially useful for developing your ideas for essay writing.

Each room is  equipped with a high speed-heavy capacity printer that you may use.  Currently, we do not charge for printing, however, we do ask that you do not overuse the printers.  Print only what you need, do not waste paper,  and print no more than ten pages per day.

When you arrive at the lab, you will be asked to show your Glendale College ID or other picture ID so that we can check you in at the front desk. We ask that you please leave your food and drinks outside of the computer area.  Finally, you may want to bring a blank recordable compact disk or flash drive so you can save your work.
The English lab located on the second floor in the Administration building in room AD 238.  We are open 8:00 AM until 9:00 PM Monday through Thursday and 8:00 AM - 2:00 PM on Fridays.  We hope to see you soon.
