Certificate Rationale

Upon release of the Surgeon General's report on physical activity and health, the federal government and its research organizations formally pronounced that the development of chronic diseases relate to dietary habits and sedentary lifestyle. Taking active measures to modify lifestyle and behaviors is an effective and recommended means by which to prolong life and promote quality of life. Until recently there have been few educated Health and Fitness Specialists working in fitness facilities. To correct this problem, multiple organizations have been created, whose purposes are to certify persons who have knowledge in health and fitness to safely deliver proper and adequate health/fitness education to the public.

In order to earn a national certification of this sort, recipients must be adept at assessing health and fitness status, and at designing programs based on current exercise and health guidelines. Fitness centers are now requiring that the NASM, ACE or equivalent national certification be earned before or upon the hiring of new employees.

Glendale Community College Physical Education division has produced this certificate program, which teaches students the means by which to apply exercise science theory to practical work with clients. In doing so, students develop the skills needed to pass a written examination and become prepared for practical, immediate work with clientele in the field.
