The first in an occasional series of explanations from our faculty labor union, the Guild

"So, the contract faculty took a 1% pay cut a couple of years ago in exchange for one unit of banked time each on July 1, 2006. How exactly will that work?"

Glad you asked. Each contract faculty member employed at the time of the agreement, including those who were on leave (sabbaticals, etc.) will have one unit added to their banked time this coming July 1st. It can be "un-banked" in the normal ways that other banked time can, as specified in the Guild bargaining agreement (www.glendale.edu/guild). This includes using it to reduce the amount you work one semester, or receiving overload pay for it by cashing it in during a semester when you are working your normal load.

"What if someone who was a contract faculty member at the time of the agreement leaves the college before July 1, 2006?"

They are eligible for the unit and will be paid for it on July 1, 2006.

"What if someone who was a contract faculty member at the time of the agreement is an adjunct faculty member on July 1, 2006?"

They are eligible for the unit and will be paid for it on July 1, 2006.

"What if someone was hired as a contract faculty member between the time of the agreement and July 1, 2006"?

They are not eligible to receive the banked time.

"What if I am eligible, but I already have the maximum amount of banked time?"

You will still receive the unit, temporarily putting you over the maximum.

"If I choose to cash it at the overload rate, how much dough are we talking about here?"

It depends on your placement on the overload salary schedule (Schedule B in our bargaining agreement), but should be in the neighborhood of $900.

"Isn’t the Guild just like Santa Claus, regularly getting us wonderful presents?"

Yes, Virginia.
