143 Jazz Band (1/2 - 1 Unit)
Music 143 is a class for students who wish to learn the techniques used in performing jazz and big band literature. Emphasis is placed on developing music reading skills and gaining additional familiarity with improvisational techniques. Students perform with other instruments or with singers. Selected works by contemporary composers are rehearsed and performed. Performance 3 hours. Prerequisite: Ability to perform in a proficient manner on the trumpet, trombone, saxophone, drums, string bass, guitar, or piano. Note: An audition is required. Please conctact the instructor at ext. 5621 prior to the first class meeting. Students must provide an appropriate instrument. Concert dress is required. This course may be taken 4 times; a maximum of 4 units may be earned. Transfer credit: CSU, UC, USC
