GCC Board Announces Selection of Interim College President

The Board of Trustees of the Glendale Community College District announced the selection of Dr. Jim Riggs as the college’s Interim Superintendent/President effective July 1, 2012 at the June 25 board meeting. Dr. Riggs will serve as Interim Superintendent/President through June 30, 2013.

Dr. Riggs brings a wealth of experience in community college leadership and instruction to Glendale College. He is currently the Professor of Community College Education at CSU Stanislaus where he teaches full time in the University’s Doctoral Program in Educational Leadership and supervises research in the areas of community college leadership and student success. Prior to joining the faculty at CSU Stanislaus, he served as the president of Columbia College in Sonora, California from 1997 to 2007. Other leadership posts include serving as Vice President of Education and Student Services at Lincoln Land Community College in Springfield, Illinois; Executive Dean of the Clear Lake Campus of Yuba College; Associate Dean of Instruction/Extended Education, Merced College; and Director of the Kachemak Campus of the University of Alaska. He began his career as a music and humanities instructor at Wenatchee Valley College in Washington State. He also taught doctoral courses at the University of the Pacific and Sacramento State University, and has published articles on issues related to community college leadership.

Dr. Riggs holds a doctorate in Higher Education Leadership and Curriculum from the University of Southern California as well as master’s and bachelor’s degrees in music. He has been active in numerous educational, civic and cultural organizations during his 35 year career in education and continues to be active in music as a conductor. He and his wife, Juliann live in Columbia, California located in the Sierra foothills north of Yosemite National Park. They have three grown children who live in Northern California with their families. Dr. Riggs will reside in the Glendale area during his term as Interim Superintendent/President.

Dr. Riggs will be officially welcomed at a reception in Kreider Hall on Monday, July 2, 2012 at 5:30 p.m.

There will be a reception welcoming the new interim superintendent/president Dr. Jim Riggs at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, July 2 in the foyer outside Kreider Hall. There will be light refreshments. Everyone is welcome.
