“The softball program at Glendale Community College is looking for not only talented players but more importantly, student-athletes with a great attitude, ready to make the commitment to change their lives.’’
This quote by Head Coach Dave “Hawk” Wilder clearly sums up his philosophy as one of the most experienced coaches at the community college level. Coach Wilder begins his 14th season at GCC with decades of work as a coach of youth teams throughout the San Fernando Valley and as a sought after private coach. A Native American and a member of the Karuk Tribe, Wilder is passionate about his heritage and has given much back to his people.
More than just a coach that considers himself and his players successful beyond wins and losses, Wilder stresses the team concept first and foremost and finds his greatest joy in talking to and about his former players who have transferred to four-year schools to continue their playing careers and to further their education.
The GCC softball program is also fortunate to have assistant coaches with over twenty years of combined experience. Sal Pizzo begins his sixth year with the program, and as the top assistant, brings extensive head coaching experience at the travel-ball and high school levels.
Coache George "Gunner" Dumais begin their third year on the staff. He has coached for several years at the high school level and led the elite Marine Corps team where his "Gunner" nickname originated as a gunner sergeant.
The 2013 team will feature just two returning sophomores as well as a group of talented freshmen. Coach Wilder will continue to coach the game his way, spearheaded by his philosophy that pitching, defense, speed and quickness will be the keys to winning games and competing in the always tough Western State Conference.
