Welcome to !Avancemos!
A Learning Opportunity for Spanish-Speaking Students
What is Avancemos ?
¡Avancemos! is a multi-level program for English as a Second Language (ESL) students. It is designed specifically to support the needs of adults who speak Spanish as a first language. ¡Avancemos! classes are part of Glendale Community College’s Noncredit ESL Division.
We currently enroll more than 200 students per semester. We offer six classes a semester at most levels of ESL: Literacy (Level 0) to level 4.
¡Avancemos! has been successful because we have customized this program with Latino students specifically in mind. All Avancemos instructors speak Spanish and have lived or were born in Spanish-speaking countries. All of our instructors help students feel comfortable in the classroom so that everyone can relax and learn.
How will I learn English in this program?
All ¡Avancemos! instructors hold master’s degrees in Teaching English as a Second Language or a related field, and they know how to create dynamic, interesting, effective language classes. Classes teach reading, writing, listening, and speaking, and they focus on communication skills that you can use in your everyday life.
Classes in ¡Avancemos! follow the same curriculum as regular Noncredit ESL program. The only difference is that instructors in Levels 0-2 in this program use a teaching method called first-language support. This means that they use a little Spanish in the classroom in order to help students learn English.
First-language support is not bilingual education. In first-language support, Spanish is used when necessary to explain grammar as well as to discuss test-taking skills, study habits, and other related topics. Students have found that this method increases the rate of language acquisition and improves language retention.
We have seen great success with this methodology. Students tell us that our classes help them understand English in a way they hadn’t thought possible. They tell us that they are able to learn faster and retain the information better when the teacher understands their first language and some concepts are explained in Spanish.
Where and when do you hold these classes?
Our evening classes meet at 1122 E. Garfield Ave., on the corner of Garfield and Chevy Chase. This location is called the Garfield Campus, a satellite of Glendale Community College.
Evening classes meet from Monday to Thursday, from 6:00 to 9:30 p.m.
We meet from Monday to Thursday, 8:30 a.m. - 12:00 noon.
How much do the classes cost?
They are free! We only ask that you pay for your book, which usually costs between $30 and $50.
When do classes start?
¡Avancemos! classes follow the GCC semester calendar. We offer fall and spring semesters; each semester lasts 16 weeks. The Fall semester begins on Monday.
We strongly recommend that you attend the first day of class. While it is best to start classes at the beginning of the semester, our program is open to you throughout the school year. If there is space in a class, you may start at any time.
What do I need in order to register for classes?
All you need is your name, birth date, and mailing address. We do not require any other kind of documentation. Please come to our office and we will register you into the appropriate level class. You will be given short placement test to determine your current English knowledge.
