As Glendale Community College enters its 86th year, the Foundation Board is firmly committed to helping students succeed. Scholarships, purchases of equipment and funding for special programs are all ways that the Foundation enhances educational opportunities for Glendale’s students. Foundation president Mike Haney describes how fundraising efforts by the Foundation inspire student success.
“We have a large endowment fund that we oversee in conjunction with a financial management company, Capital Guardian,” says Haney. “Today, with close to $10m in assets, we disburse funds for all the various departments and divisions of the college and provide one of the largest scholarship programs in the state. Last year, for example, we gave out over $361,000 in scholarships and academic and college support. Now we are giving an additional $87,000 that includes funding for the new Student Success Fund for enhancements to the classroom like equipment, computers and classroom upgrades.”
Haney, whose family endows a scholarship for students enrolled in Emergency Service Provider programs, says “I have a special feeling for the Fire Academy and Police Cadet program because of my background in both of those areas.” Besides these first responder programs, Glendale College offers a large variety of vocational opportunities
for students ranging from culinary arts to computer assisted manufacturing, in both certificate and degree programs.
“I would like to see us work closely with the Superintendent/President, trustees, faculty, staff and students to continue to raise funds to help our students succeed,” says Haney, who welcomes Dr. David Viar as Glendale’s new head. “Dr. Viar comes with an impressive background in the community college system and has already demonstrated his understanding and support for the work of the Foundation. I am personally looking forward to working with him as is the rest of the Foundation Board.”
