The Glendale Vaqueros continued their road to a conference title beating Ventura College who has been undefeated in conference since 2006. "This is a great win today" said Bob Mackay. "Ventura has dominated conference for the last 9 years and we have had many years where we have played them close but this is a big step for us in the right direction".
The Vaqueros started off with strong wins from Dat Le winning 6-0,6-0 at number 4 singles. "I felt really good out there today" said Dat Le. "I felt like I am playing some of my best tennis right now and happy with the way I am playing". Dro Dermegerdichian followed up next winning 6-0, 6-2 at number 2 singles. At number 5 Cameron Braun won 6-4, 6-2 and Santiago Segovia at number 6 finished 6-0, 7-6(5).
With 4 points in hand, the last match in singles came down to Hosep Orojian who played a tight match against Vitor Mendes. "That guy is the best guy I have played so far this year" said Hosep Orojian. "That guy fights for everything out there and he is one of the best volleyers I have seen." Orojian would lose the first set in a tiebreak 7-6(0) but would go on taking the second set 4-6. In the third Orojian went up 4-2 with break points to go up double break but Mendes was able to get back on serve and eventually finished the match 6-4. "It is tough losing matches like this because there so close" said Orojian. "One or two points can determine a winner in a match like this."
Going into doubles the Vaqueros would clinch the match from Dat Le and Son Tran at number 2 doubles winning 8-2. "We played pretty good today and we were definitely excited to be able to clinch this match" said Dat Le. Cameron Braun and Clayton Pauff would finish next winning 8-3 at number 3 doubles to give the Vaqueros a 6-3 win over the Ventura College Pirates. "This is a great team we got with a great group of guys" said Bob Mackay. "The last time we beat them was 2005 and that was the year we won conference, so to come out here and break that streak is a good feeling". The Vaqueros will next play Cerritos College on Tuesday March 4th at the Vaqueros Tennis Complex.
