How to Search for Books

Getting Started

Accessing the Library Online Catalog web page.

  • In GCC Library - Double click the Online Resources icon and choose Library Online Catalog.
  • From Home - Access the library web page (http://www.glendale.edu/library). Click Find Books under the Research column or the tab Catalog at the top of the page. No password is needed for remote access unless you are using Electronic Books.

Searching: Basic Search

Use the Basic Search option (see example below) to do simple searches.

  • To locate books ABOUT a subject (person, place, concept, etc.), use Subject Heading Search
  • To locate books BY an author, use Author Search (type author's last name, then first name)
  • To locate books or journals by their EXACT title, use Title Search

  1. Type your search term in the Search For box.
  2. Next, choose the Type of Search.
  3. Click Search

Search: Advance Search

Use Advanced (Keyword) Search when you're not sure of exact subject headings, author names, and titles - but only know certain words or phrases which describe what you're looking for. You can either search for your term(s) in any part of the book's record (Keyword Anywhere) or within specific fields (like Title, Author, etc. ) if you only know part of the title, name or subject.   1. Type search terms in the Search For box
  2. Select the appropriate fields to search from the Search In select lists.
  3. Click Search

Results: Advance Search

  • In Advanced (Keyword) Search, you will get a list of any library item whose catalog record contains the keyword you typed. Most recently published items are usually listed first.
  1. In this example there are 74 results
  2. Results show Title, Author, Date of Publicaiton, Locaton in the GCC Library, Call Number, and Availability.
  3. Click the checkbox next to the Title to select it.

Results: Basic Search

Search results are displayed in a variety of ways (see examples below).

  • In Basic Search, when you do a Subject Heading Search, you will get an alphabetical list of subject headings. Click on a subject heading to view the titles our library has on that subject.
  • In Basic Search, when you do an Author or Title Search, you will get a list of items by the author or a list of titles which begin with the words you typed.

  1. Click button Info for similar subject headings
  2. Note that this example shows two titles with the Subject Heading Elections California.

Results: Advanced (Keyword) Search

In Advanced (Keyword) Search, you will get a list of any library item whose catalog record contains the keyword you typed. Most recently published items are usually listed first.

  1. The results screen will indicate how many records were selected and number on this screen.
  2. Results show Title, Author, Date of Publication, Location in the GCC Library, Call Number and Availability
  3. Select the checkbox next to the Title to select it.

Printing, E-mailing, & Saving to Disk

You can print, email, or save all records (or choose individual ones by placing a checkmark in the box to the left of a title as in the example above).

Note: When you click on the disk icon, the records you checked will display in printer-friendly format. Choose File/Print or File/Save As from the menu to print or save accordingly.

  1. As in this example, you can select that only selected records in the results will be printed or saved. Or you can choose all records.
  2. Always choose the radio button for "Save as Text" option for Format
  3. Choose the Print or Save to Disk button after selecting results and format options.
